Barenaked Ladies cancel SeaWorld Show following Animal Rights petition

I just knew the Barenaked Ladies were doomed after they parted ways with original leader singer (heart and soul of the band) Steven Page!

Following a recent petition by an Animal Rights Activist against the band’s upcoming performance at Orlando’s SeaWorld, Barenaked Ladies have chosen to cancel the show altogether; in yet another apparent ‘cave to pressure’ from a radical ‘tree-hugging’ organization.

A resident of St. Catharines started a petition asking Barenaked Ladies to reconsider their SeaWorld concert scheduled for Feb. The petition received nearly 12,000 signatures (still scratching my head over that) and included a suggestion the band watch Animal Right’s propaganda flick  Blackfish –  a film portraying claims of abuse to killer whales in large theme parks.

In a post on their Facebook, Barenaked Ladies stated; ” We’ve talked things over, and decided not to play at Seaworld at this time. We watch movies too, ya know!”

So, without coming out and saying they’ve heeded to pressure on basis of cruelty at SeaWorld, the Ladies claim their decision to cancel had more to do with their fans than Animal Rights. (eyes rolling…)

Dammit, I just knew that infamous line from If I had a Million Dollars where the Ladies sing they want a fur coat, but not a REAL fur coat that’s cruel – would come back to haunt us!!

Come on guys, your decision to cancel SeaWorld has EVERYTHING to do with Animal Rights and ‘perceived’ cruelty to animals portrayed in some propaganda film, why not come out and admit it?

On a more personal note, I am already booked to visit SeaWorld with my family in January (have e-tickets on me as we speak) even plan to write an article about it, and if you think this guy is canceling because of some PETA-style petition or video, you’ve got another thing coming!

The Barenaked Ladies went on to say that “The SeaWorld folks have been gracious, and extended us invitations to the park to learn more about what they do, and how they do it”

My suggestion to the Barenaked Ladies:  take SeaWorld up on their offer next time before running off to the Big Smoke with your tail between legs, I bet even Rob Ford goes to SeaWorld!!

Oh and another suggestion: get Steven Page back!!

  1. Someone should show him the movie Bambi
    bare naked dummies
12,000 on the petition but they would have drawn about 1000 people

  2. What wankers….

Heard a good one on similar PROTESTS today on Welfare Radio aka CBC…..this morning….

“I love animals, I love animals…DON’T WEAR FUR….NO NEVER WHERE FUR”

“Did you you know it takes 14 TREES just for the PROTEST SIGNS”?????

    “Don’t wear Fur”!

It was some weird comedian never heard of afore…but thought he was about bang on on that score!

  3. Typical. Bow to pressure and keep the activists happy. I have much more respect for people who actually stand up to the activists and tell them to shove it.

I had a run in with an “activist” recently too. I posted a picture on FB of a buck our group shot during the rifle hunt, and one of my friends (a childhood friend to boot) came back with a comment “it takes a real man to shoot a defenseless animal, blah, blah, blah…” I was instantly defriended. Apparently the last 30 years all changed when she realized I hunt. Like it makes me a completely different person or something. I checked, double checked, asked my wife to check, and sure enough, I’m still the same guy she was friends with for 30 years… I don’t have any time for crap like that, hence I didn’t even justify her rant with a rebuttal.

  4. good morning jeff and fellow outdoor people the little pukes that do not approve of hunting or fishing can move away and stay as far away from anybody who likes the outdoors and providing food for their families .I hunt because it’s my right and i enjoy all of the bounty that the forests provide but i respect nature and the ecosystems as much as the next guy .I had a run in with a hugger in Almonte and this moron told me i am a murderer i said when the world comes to and end you can live on nuts and berries otherwise politely take off

    1. Good to hear from you all…

I think what bothers me most about this story isn’t the fact that Barenaked Ladies caved to pressure from Antis. I realize these guys probably all grew-up in the City of Toronto/Scarborough, and hunting/conservation was never really a part of their lives..not did they really understood it.

What REALLY bothers is that clown from St Catharines who started all this and the 12,000 ‘misguided’ individuals who actually signed his petition! Geez, you’d think 12K people could harness some power for good instead of evil?

This whole situation further exemplifies the HUGE disparity that exists between Urban masses and rural dwellers. I used to secretly believe City-folk ignorance toward fish & wildlife was nothing more than a cliché, but the more I hear, the more I believe it to be true.

Educate yourselves people for goodness sake….with all the evil and destruction in the world today, you guys choose a theme park(& pop band) to target as your pet project????

There are no real words to explain the ignorance in that level of thinking…

  5. Most of these people’s world exists in Flakebook, and their nature experience is via Youtube or a city park. If there was ever a major catastrophe they would be the first to starve and the first to knife you in the back for your rabbit leg when they ran out of canned food. My thinking is that if you don’t like the ‘killing of animals’ that’s fine, don’t eat meat or wear any part of an animal for that matter. btw, burgers are from animals similar to deer! I don’t have a problem with your decision and I won’t sign a petition to save Tofu. Just stay out of matters you know nothing about!
Btw, ever read the book “What plants knows”? If plants feel pain then what about their feelings? What’s left to eat?

    1. johan wrote “they would be the first to starve and the first to knife you in the back for your rabbit leg when they ran out of canned food”

Bahahaha….man, I really did laugh out loud over that one!!

I’ll go check that book out sounds interesting..

  6. yup they to can go to a warm place…. if we all steal there music off the net then we can watch them starve and have to hunt and fish like the rest of us common folk….

  7. I’ve been laughing out loud through the whole thread!

Animal welfare, yes, animal rights, no.

  8. I’m a bit conflicted about this subject though. I am a hunter, a conservationist, a lover of nature and all of its bounty. But I can’t condone cruelty. Is putting killer whales in a tank and making them do tricks for human entertainment ethical? I’m not sure. Is putting a bear on a bicycle in a circus with a ring through his nose entertainment? How should we as hunters view this?

    1. Hunting mom, in my opinion, whales in captivity would be akin to elephants used in the Shriner’s Circus..or really any other wild animal domesticated and placed in a zoo. I would think human-provided food and shelter in a controlled environment must be like a fancy retirement home. Sure, they are no longer living in the wild, but in exchange their longevity and life expectancy is probably doubled. Not a bad trade I would think…

Besides, if we forced humans to allow all fish & wildlife to remain in the wild – untouched, unmanaged and left to their own accord – this ‘preservationist’ way of thinking flies in the face of true conservation.

Cruelty to animals, in my opinion, occurs more through neglect..when we do nothing at all and simply leave nature the way it is..

  9. Just an update – Heart also has now cancelled an appearance at SeaWorld.

Hunting Mom….you raise some great questions and reasons why I haven’t brought my kids to a zoo.

My opinion is if you want to see wild animals, go see them in their natural settings.

    1. OK, we may not all be huge supporters of animals in captivity, unfortunately if we support the agenda put forward by proponents of Blackfish, we align ourselves DIRECTLY with people who’s real underlying agenda to steal our hunting and trapping heritage!! What next…abolish Calgary stampede…stop sale of burgers…

Now Willie Nelson and Joan Jett have also cancelled shows at SeaWorld…looks like propaganda is working. Keep in mind that the old ‘divide and concur’ is a tactic used to defeat even the strongest armies in the world..just sayin.

SeaWorld spokesman Nick Gollattscheck said in a statement that marine park officials respect the performers’ decisions but added that they were disappointed that “a small group of misinformed individuals” was able to influence the performers.

  10. Outdoors Guy, I sure don’t want to support their agenda. That’s why I feel conflicted about this.

    1. Hunting mom, I know you what you mean…it is my instinctive reaction to get my hackle up – as ‘most’ of what comes out of these groups is drivel.

I suppose I may need to investigate this one a bit deeper.

Thanks for the kind words regarding my Pembroke Daily Observer Outdoors Column…it’s the only one we have left, after all, and I can certainly use the support.

  11. I am also on the fence with this conversation about zoo animals, carnivals and marine shows. I’ve attended all of these events, not sure if we should be caging animals for our entertainment. I have been to an interesting park in Quebec called Parc Omega, where the animals have hundreds of acres to live and thrive. Having said that, some of the animals are kept in a smaller environment because of special needs for them and the animals around them (food source). I am a hunter and I am respectful of the environment ( not a tree hugger) and I eat what I shoot, no chemical additives to wild game meat. Hunting is not all about the killing, there is being in the outdoors with the animals and trees etc. Having rambled on about this this decision belongs to Bare Naked Ladies and their music stands for itself! Cheers Moose man.

    1. Hey moose man..very well put, thank you!

I am quite familiar with Park Omega in Montebello..have brought my kids there many times over the years, and you’re right, one does get the sense that they dwell in a natural environment, even if high fences surround this huge natural complex.

I guess we tend to be more acceptible of animals in captivity…depending on the size of the enclosure…which I guess this is what beef is with the film Black Fish, that these large orcas are kept in such cramped quarters…
