Fairmont Kenauk up for sale!

When I heard the news of Stompin’ Tom’s passing..I knew it was going to be a bad day.

I am not sure what to think this morning, with the National Post article indicating the my favorite home away from home – Fairmont Kenauk – in Montebello is now up for sale!

 What???

 Kenauksign

Anyone who’s been following my articles over the last decade have, undoubtedly, heard my talk about this little slice of heaven. I have been going to Kenauk regularly since 2000, and have followed the history of this magnificent place since I was a boy.

Kenaukroad

Kenauk was once an exclusive private hunting and fishing club…for the Quebec Senators and political elites like Pierre Trudeau and Lester B Pearson. It was known as the Seigneurie Club and famous for its moose and deer hunting, as well as top notch trout, pike and bass fishing. Contrary to what some articles are reporting, there is no bear hunting at Kenauk.

The immense 65, 000 acre estate is currently owned by Oxford Properties which acquired Kenauk from Fairmont Hotels back in 2006. There is no word as to why they have decided to put the property on the market.

I was doing some quick math, and if all the regular contributors here at the Outdoors Guy Blog put-in 4 Million apiece we could all be co-owners.

Ahhhh, dare to dream!!!

    1. Yes johan…would that be a post-dated, third party out-of-State cheque???

I have one of those too…hehe

  1. Hope Public will still have access to territory after the sale.

Our Ottawa Flyfishers Society (OFS) have been renting a few cottages during the Spring and Fall for trout fishing outings for its members. We praticed catch & release for our enjoyment and also to maintain the fishing quality.

Beautiful place to share with fellow enthusiasts.

    1. LeGrand, dont even say that!! There is no reason to believe public assess will be cut off..and the place just went on the market.

  2. Jeff, without being pessimistic, lots of $$$$ flowing in the world by rich people and organisations. A private estate for their own needs and all of their (his) wives, and relatives is just pocket change.

I rented a propriety a few years back for hunting moose and deer, and was advised when I wanted to renew that the owner had sold it recently to a mexican who was not interested in having anyone hunt on it, except his immediate family.

Things do happen. But let’s be hopefull.

And hopefully they will re-open its hatchery. There is a need in the area.

    1. Yes LG, and you know as well as I the hatchery has been closed for a couple of years at least. Last I heard, the gov’t was involved somehow and was planning to contribute to the hatchery proj somehow..I suppose that is not likely to happen now.

      1. Going back to Fairmont Kenauk for a moment:

General Manager Bill Nowell has just confirmed with me that it’s business as usual over at Kenauk, with reservations for winter of 2014 being confirmed presently.

    1. fishr, the entire Territory is 100% privately owned…was purchased by Fairmont some time ago, who sold it in 2006 apparently to a group of investors.

  7. Guys, I was joking.

Did you not notice the “LOL”.

Don’t you know me by now.

    Congrats iggy.

  8. I’m in too; how much would we each need?
We have been going there since 1990 when it was owned by Canadian Pacific. One summer, our car rolled into one of the lakes and we were mortified that we damaged the pristine lake (oil slick). They were all great with us and now we laugh about it.
We have rented numerous different cabins and took my Father there for summer vacations for years. The last thing he remembered before passing was being in the boat on the lake early in the morning with the lake smooth like a mirror and the mist lifting in the sunrise with the loons calling… I can’t imagine not being able to go to Kenauk. Too badt he Government can’t buy it and make it into National park.

    1. I agree Gail, Kenauk is a National treasure and I feel fortunate to live only 30 mins away! Im not really sure what I would do if I could never go back. Since 2000, I have stayed in probably 8 diff chalets, fished a pile of lakes and the Kinonge River, and hunted in almost every corner of that wonderful territory!

If I were to win the lottery tomorrow I know what I’m buying..and you’d be welcome to visit, anytime!

  9. Nathalie and I discovered Kenauk a few years ago and have had the chance to get out on lake papineau several times over the past few years to enjoy the excellent bass fishing. We really enjoy staying for a few days or just getting out for a day of fishing with a shore side lunch. Actually, I love it so much that to be able to make a proper open fire shoreside lunch, I’ve installed a real grill on isle de Indian Sud. (just ask Daniel about that adventure! Lol) Nothing beats fresh caught bass and fries cooked over an open fire!
Such a beautiful lake will likely go to ruin over the coming years as lots are sold and the lake becomes over populated. Exclusitivety has its price but the tranquility of Kenauk is truely priceless!

  10. Another victim of globalisation, much like over-50 unemployeds.Just hoping and praying for either a major market meltdown and-or blocking foreign ownership of open land before the bulldozers and readymixers and ::KEEP OUT;; signs arrive! So much for the true north strong and free!
