Grow op Bears Gain National Attention

Well, it is certainly great to be back from holidays, all rested up and full of piss and vinegar!

I’m really glad to see that no one tore this place down whilst I was gone..although it was touch and go there for awhile.

So, have you heard about the Grow-Op Bears in Alberta? What a hornets nest that is!

According to SUN MEDIA:

“A group of up to 15 bears were found a few weeks ago near Christina Lake, hanging about near a patch of more than 1,000 pot plants and devoid of natural instincts to be fearful of humans.

Officials said the concern now is the bears are dependent on human handouts, like dog food allegedly doled out to keep them in the area, and they may be unable to fend for themselves.

Criminal charges are pending against the people who occupied the land and they likely face charges under the Provincial Wildlife Act, which, on conviction, could see a fine of up to $100,000.”

Now a petition has been started on Facebook (God forbid) to save these bears which appear destined to be euthanized.

The whole situation is a shame on many different levels..

What do you think about all this..drop me a line?

P.S. Well, hope everyone had a good summer, believe it or not in less than two weeks it’ll all be over.

P.P.S. I hoping to put up a post featuring frequent Outdoors Guy contributer Iggy and his successful black bear hunt in Northern ON….

  1. i would kill them and have them processed and given to the homeless shelters for food. it would be a shame to just destroy them . I am sure that the hunters for the hungry that are starting this year in ontario would love to take this meat off the hands of the government

  2. As if they wouldnt be able to provide for themselves.

They could release them with tags and monitor them for a while, im sure such beast can handle on their own when hungry.

Killing would be of non sense.

I am the eyes and ears of nature

  3. “they could release them with tas and monitor them” …. ” i am the eyes and ears of nature” All i can say is GET YOUR MONEY OUT THEN

  4. hahaha You are funny…Im sure the Gov can come up with some type of tax name.

    CC
I am the voice and and breathe of nature

  5. don’t know if you are the eyes and ears of nature
but I do know your tooooo much

tried to send you the bear pics twice and both times they bounced back

  6. Personally, I would drop them off at Pam Anderson’s place via Peta. Judging by the men in Pam’s life, she should be able to keep them all high for the rest of their lives. The only issue may be the possible backlash of being served Soy salads every freaking day.

  7. hey c.c maybe they could hire you to keep an eye on them for a while, you know make sure they don’t trash any camp sites or harass any neighborhoods ect..

  8. I don’t agree with killing the bears. It wasn’t their fault. However, if it is determined that they cannot fend for themselves, or they become nuisances, they should be captured and sent to zoos… a lousy fate, but still better than death.

  9. Thank you very much…

A bit of humour never killed anyone…They should leave the bears over there and cut down the pot plant to bring here for you guys as you need something to calm down…..geez…

On another note have a great day!

  10. Dont worry CC, I think they’re just teasing you..it was the ‘eyes and ears of nature’ thing that got them going…

  11. You gotta hand it to these pot gardeners anyhow…training bears to watch over their planation – now that is ingenious.

Back home the growers have to watch over their own plantations during the summer…I just wish they’d stay the hell out of our deer woods!

Think its time to start training some bears of my own!!

  12. hey CC, as I said to a guy on the beach try to sell me pot in St Lucia when I was down there this past winter, I used to try that stuff, then I grew up. 😉
    “eyes and ears of nature”
    is what got me going.
Kind of over the top, like you’re God or something LOL

  13. Bet you never inhaled, though, right Iggy?

Any chance you could downsize that bear image a tad? There’s no way I can get an image of 7 mg’s on here.

  14. just wish our growers would use monster bucks .. can you imagine a big buck strolling in to have a nibble and then lie down to mellow out .. no tracking no mess no fuss… it could be like catch and release while deer high take picture and walk away … i think event the eyes and ears of nature could agree to this one

  15. you need to switch internet provider my new privider alows me to send 100 mb files .. 🙂

  16. Chessy, its not that..files of that size are just too large to publish online..they take way too long to load and drive the web people crazy..

    Outdoorsguy

  17. jeff mabey they need to look after the pot a while so the web people can mellow …. ( i thought he was sending it to your private email )

    ps

at iggy”s age when he gets something that big he does not want to make it smaller

  18. Hey Tom..you think that Soy bean died at Pam’s house might put those bears over the edge?

    Outdoorsguy

  19. Fishr, sorry your comment took so long to get approved..it had nothing to do with content, just a technical glitch.

  20. Hey guys sorry for the late post, I missed you so much…. specially Chessy 🙂

the eyes and ears of nature thing came from a trapping site. It said that most trappers spend lots of time in the forrest observing and seeing things and are good contact for the MNR to report wild life behavior among other things. I myself spends lots of time out there and love to observe and trap.

Cheessy I am happy to hear you are out of this terrible habbit of puffing away…not good or you bros!

  21. Iggy,

Yes my uncle thought me lots on the subject when I was younger, he passed away not long ago. I used to follow him everywhere, it was awesome. I was in the process of taking the course and get my license as my uncle practiced fur bearing and skinned some small animals and it was very interesting. I wish he was still here so I could learn some more.

I will still go forward with getting my license as this is a great experience before really jumping into hunting for big animals….and personally I like it very much…the only problem now is that I have no contacts anymore on who I could sell or give the small animals for the fur….keeping in mind that I would like to learn how to skin them myself

    CC

  22. My post seem to not want to be approved also…

Yes I’m a rookie though, my uncle thought me some valuable things but passed away recently, since I have not been able to find any mentor or buddies to share this cool hobby with. I am looking forward to take courses this winter and get my license so I can follow in my uncle steps…lately I only been out and observing the wilderness…I am just missing an important key…fur-bearing knowledge or a contact I could sell or exchange.

    CC

  23. well Trapper he is right into it and I’m sure he could give you lots of advise. Also, if I’m not mistaken, and Trapper would know better, I think during the course they teach you skinning

  24. Iggy, are you referring to CC getting into Trapping? I know he does have a major muskrat problem out his way…

Sorry CC, was I suppose to mention that?

    Outdoorsguy

  25. Indeed I do jeff, It must be faith cause now I am planning on taking a course this fall, to be honest its hard to find a course in the region.

Too bad I cant find any courses before October so i can be legal for trapping season. A bonus would be to find a fur-bearer.

    CC

  26. CC you take that course this winter and you”ll meet lots of people with same interest and who knows maybe one or two that dont live to far from you, just get involved and stay involved. have fun

  27. Speaking of bears, Mrs Outdoorsguy called at 1:30 to say she just about ran into a bear on the 417 around the March Road exit.

Evidently, it was a good-sized adult black bear and somehow made it across the hwy without getting nailed by a car!

This is Jeff Morrison reporting from the Ottawa valley..where one wayward bear was last seen heading towards Ottawa…..
