May long weekend in The Great Outdoors

Regardless of what you have planned this May long weekend be it fishing, cottaging or camping, I wish you all the best in The Great Outdoors!!

What’s new? Where have I been, you ask?

I just returned this week from my annual trout fishing adventure in Temiscaming and will be blogging(not bragging) about that next week. Also, keep an eye out Thursday for the latest Outdoors Guy column in the Pembroke Daily Observer.

My 6th book release; The Canadian Berry Cookbook will be on the shelves in the next few weeks, and the summer issue of Bounder Magazine is due to hit local stores by end of May.

HOWEVER!!!

The ABSOULUTE BIGGEST news to hit the Ottawa-Gatineau hunting and fishing world THIS YEAR has yet to be announced!!!!

Have I piqued your curiosity?  Official announcement to come in the next week or two. (maybe, if you behave yourself..hehe)

All the best this weekend, drive safe and enjoy all the Great Outdoors has to offer.

  1. Cabella’s AND Bass Pro Shops, nearly side by side???

    Here’s a quip for everyone….

I was walking down the street when I was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked me for a couple of dollars for dinner.

I took out my wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked,”If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?”

“No, I had to stop drinking years ago,” the homeless man replied.

“Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying food?” I asked.

“No, I don’t waste time fishing,” the homeless man said..”I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive.”

“Will you spend this on hunting equipment?” I asked.

“Are you NUTS!” replied the homeless man. “I haven’t gone hunting in 20 years!”

“Well,” I said, “I’m not going to give you money. Instead, I’m going to take you home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife.”

The homeless man was astounded. “Won’t your wife be furious with you for doing that?

I replied, “Don’t worry about that. It’s important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking, fishing and hunting.”

    1. HAHAHA…Herman, that one is priceless my friend!

      Its funny cause its true!!

  2. Hehe Good one Herman

There was a time not long ago that I was in Algonquin Park every May long weekend. Catching trout and watching bears. Don’t really know what happened to that trip.
Now I’m sitting at my cottage fighting black flies.
I am however going shooting at “the farm” today.
We’ll shoot the 300 Ultra Mag at 100 and 350 yards
    That’s always fun.

    1. Yes Iggs..I miss those stories of when you used to go to the Park. Catching trout, feeding the bears along the highway, that sorta thing.

350 yards? You bringing that elephant gun north this fall? Lots of moose sign last week around Temiscaming..makes me wish we still hunted up there.

    Yes, I’m behaving myself.
    Yes, very curious.

    Please tell.

  4. Yup the 300 RUM is still a virgin when it comes to moose although it has taken down a couple of deer with the lighter bullets. I miss Algonquin Park. Whenever I’m in the interior I always feel at home and relaxed.
By the way I made 3 moose kill shots at 354 yards last weekend.
Still waiting for the big announcement Jeff?????

    1. Don’t worry Iggs..its coming!

354 Yards…geez, that’s a good grouping. Not even sure Chessy could do that..hehe

  5. Iggy, he’s just keeping us on the edge of our seats waiting for the announcement…
    :-)))

    1. Ah Herman, you got me figured out!

Don’t worry all will be known soon..how are you doing?

  6. A couple years ago I thought I was doing pretty well shooting at that distance. We have a lead chicken that hangs from a tripod. It’s about 12×12″ and about two inches thick. We have a lot of fun shooting at it but I’d never tried it at 350 yards.
So out we go to give it a shot and don’t ya know my first two shots hit the chicken. When the bullet makes contact you see the chicken swinging wildly and a huge puff of smoke.
Third shot misses but I’m now kind of strutting like the chicken
So my friend Joe steps up and hits it 9 times in a row lol
Kind of took the wind out of my sail. However he claims to be the best shot in the Outaouais and I think he may be right.

  7. I should hope you can make kill shots at 354 yards… the kill zone is the size of a 4×8 sheet of plywood LMFAO

  8. Hey Jeff, it’s been two weeks, we’ve all been behaving ourselves (more or less) how about it?

    1. Don’t worry Herman its coming! And I have my doubts you’ve really been behaving..hehe
