Spring hunt 'bruin' across the river

blackbear

In a few short weeks, black bear hunters will be traveling across the river in pursuit of North America’s most mysterious and feared big-game animal.

When the Ontario government announced the end of its’ spring black bear hunt over nine years ago, it sparked controversy and outrage – the effects of which still shudder today like an earthquake after-shock.

Ontario hunters resigned themselves to the fact that bear hunting would – for all intents and purposes – remain a sport of the fall. The province of Quebec on the other hand, not only maintained its spring bear season; many regions have reintroduced the autumn bear hunt for bow, muzzle-loader, and in some regions rifle.

Regardless of where you hunt Ursus Americana this spring, successful hunters are aware that these creatures have perhaps the keenest sense of smell of any predator alive, and that the use of cover scent and hunting from a tree-stand, is of utmost importance.

The QC bear hunt this spring gets under way May 15th – a day that bear enthusiasts from both sides of the river look forward to greatly.

  1. Yep! Me and a friend from Ontario have our season booked at an Outaouais outfitter from May 15 to the 21st.

    Yes, looking forward to it.

  2. Oh yes, you’re going to Bryson Lake Lodge or Domaine Lac Bryson?

Did Denis Lebrun ever tell you how they did there last year? I wonder how their bear numbers are?

  3. As per their bilingual newsletter

    http://www.lacbryson.com/newsletter2010.pdf

They seemed to have done really well. Even harvesting a 450 lbs bear.

The important thing is enjoying the outdoors and facilities with a friend, by sharing an adventure, and hoping that we come back with meat for the whole family to enjoy.

Camaraderie, that’s what it’s all about.

And staying at a great facility, with good hosts.

  4. Excellent!

I am sure you will find that up there..and more.

You will have to share the photos of your experience with us, LeGrand.

  5. there is no way Northerner will sit still long enough to shoot a bear, and I know he is your hunting partner LeGrand.
The black flies will run you out of the bush, especially this year with our early spring. More time in cam though 🙂

  6. You know Iggy, many outfitters in QC offer stands which are completely enclosed in bug mesh..especially those
accustomed to hunting bears in early season…

LeGrand and Northerner might just be ok…

  7. Iggy, Thermacell, always worked for me in the past 5-6 years while bear hunting, it should still do the trick.

But how big do these mosquitoes get, in that part of the Province? Maybe I should bring an anchor, just in case.

    🙂

    1. LeGrand, that looks neat but I just noticed one problem written in the fine
      print:

“Effectiveness of the patch is related to the intake of alcohol and tobacco.”

    2. Hey, that’s Italo..he’s a good man..I think I will try that product.

  8. Yes, it is also good for the “gueule de bois” (a.k.a. hangover), so if it has to work on the previous day’s alcohol content in the body, guess it loose a little of it’s strenght in neutralizing bodyly vapours that attract bugs.

Going to buy some this weekend for the trip, as a back up for the “wooden jaw” effect of the next morning.

    🙂
