Strange creature found in northern Ontario
By QMI Agency

It’s only a foot long and looks more like a deformed otter than a snake-like sea monster, but the body of a strange creature pulled from a northern Ontario lake earlier this month is causing a stir worldwide.

According to the website, a dog that was walking with its owners pulled the animal from an area creek.

It is being linked to mythological creatures like the Loch Ness Monster and Ogopogo, though many observers have already guessed it’s more likely a waterlogged bear cub or otter.

The story of the creature has already gone viral. It’s the subject of blogs from Australia to South America and has been featured in newspapers from China to the U.K., with headlines such as the U.K. Sun’s “The creature from the deep.”

  1. Sure looks like a plain old half rotten Otter to me. The picture in the Sun gives a better view of the head.

  2. why is this even news? have people in Northern Canada never seen an otter before?

  3. You sound surprised that citifolk wouldn’t have a clue what they are looking at. Not surprising at all. Remeber that this is the same crowd that thinks moose are for getting close ups in Algonquin park. Which might be ok if it wasn’t the most dangerous animal in North America.

  4. During their maiting season bull moose are the most dangerous animal in NA for sure, verry terretorial

  5. Looks like an otter to me, and I’ve seen dozens of them up close, inside and out……

    1. Trapper..come on man, do you honestly think its identicle to a partially skinned otter??

  6. well, I’m having a little trouble with that, I’ve never heard of a moose hurting a human, except in a vehicle/moose accident, has anyone ever heard of a moose attacking a human. I’ve been up pretty close to them, during the rut, close enough to see the snot coming out of their nose, but whenever they find out I’m not a cow in heat, they always run away. Now I’ve never been that close to a bear, or a four legged cougar, and I can tell you I don’t want to be either

  7. The creature in the photo looks like a decomposing otter to me too.

I think polar bears are the most dangerous animals in North America. They are the largest land carnivore in the world, they feed almost exclusively on meat, and they have very little fear of humans.

  8. This is definately a decomposed Otter . I have trapped them & seen them inside & out . Like the Trapper said when You have skinned & gutteed Them , They all look alike . Have You ever seen a skinned Bear ? it could easily pass for a Human carcass . A lot of Animals look like Humans .As i once experianced out in Alberta , a small Lamb with the skin half chewed off it,s skull, and an eye hanging out of it,s eye socket , it,s blondish woll very closely resembles a Young Child .

  9. So just because you have never heard of it, it couldn’t possibly be true? Give it a rest. Here is another little bit of information you likely haven’t heard of that is also true. A moose can out run and outlast a horse.

  10. Go up to a moose when its rutting season and see how friendly they are.
I think this animal is a just a dead water logged common animal, no its not like Nessie.

  11. @kevin west
As far a going up to a rutting moose, I have, more than once, and never been attacked, seems they always run away once the find out I’m not the species they are looking for, or should I say, try to run away

  12. For pete sakes people come on!! It is abviosly a decomposing water logged Otter. New found species some people don’t have enough to do. And as for the moose thing yes they will attack if provoked during the Rutt, and have seen this happen up close it is not pretty, but they are more likely to attack a vehicle than a human during the Rutt.

    1. Everyone seems quite convinced this is an otter…now I’ve have skinned otters before..and beaver…and rats…mink, fisher..etc..etc…and I still
don’t think this thing is your average, run-the-mill fur-bearer.

I’m actually surpised someone like the whitetail guru is so convinced its an otter…have you seen the other photos of this thing?

Personally, Im going with the dog-pig-otter hybrid!

  13. Why are you all talking about a moose!?!?! Its clearly a dog-pig-otter. If any of you people were educated you would clearly be able to see this. I have my masters degree in animology and it took me 6 years of hard work at the University of Victoria. Get off this none-sense of stupid mooses because NOBODY CARES ABOUT MOOSES WHEN WE HAVE A FRICKIN DOG-PIG-OTTER ON OUR HANDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. hahaha all this over a dead animal…anyways, I noticed lots of rambling from hunters or wanna be hunters.

For whoever said that a Moose is not dangerous and they could get close to it. Please pretty please lets go hunting next season together so you can show me how close you can get to a Moose in heat…illl make sure to bring a camera.

    hahaha city folks

    1. ‘Otter’ was a character in the 1978 movie Animal House…

  15. @ Justbrowsing
been right up close, course I’ve got a gun, and he’s got legs so guess who wind
Just wondering if anyone can accuratly quote to me the last time a man or woman got hurt by a moose, other than in a vehicle moose collision

    @ Lone Assasin, a masters in Animology! ! ! ! LOL

  16. This is most definitely a dog-pig-otter, as Lone-Assassin specified. I also went through the animology course at UVIC, and we have studied these.

  17. A truely strange creature would have been a Liberal who doesn’t want to forever increase taxes!!

  18. my god. americans please realize something for me. you have no clue what a moose can do to you, so dont even try to argue. you just simply dont have a clue. as far as this weird animal goes, noone of us knows wtf it is so relax, and wait untill scientists study it and tell us. man i laughed the entire time reading all these posts. hahaha, americans thank you. honestly, ( i have walked up to one and nothing happened) hahahha, ya o.k….youtube.com type in moose attacks would ya ppl.

    1. Jason:

Americans?? You have noticed the name of the website you’re on, right?

This is the OTTAWA SUN…as in, Ottawa, the Capital of Canada??

So your theory is that the wealth of theoretical and practical experience with moose, many of us share, actually means nothing? And we should turn to youtube for the answer?

Ok, I just wanted to be clear on that…
