The Farmers Buck by Barry Scollan

Below is the story and photos of one very successful local muzzle-loader hunt; courtesy of Richmond’s Barry Scollan.

The Farmer’s Buck
by Barry Scollan

“On December 4th using my brother’s 50 cal. tradition muzzle-loader, I decided to hunt at my neighbour’s farm.  That morning as I was walking to my watch I noticed a large deer in a corn stubble field. The deer was a long distance from me eating corn.  It made its way to a cedar bluff and disappeared out of sight.  I ran down toward my watch hoping to cut the deer off if he decided to come out.

Before I made it to my watch the buck crossed ahead of me and headed into a swampy area, cattails and long grass.  I figured he was gone…

Just then I could see large antlers over the grass as the buck turned and came back out of the slash. When I could get a good shot, I shot.

After the black smoke cleared I could see the buck running toward the swamp and then he fell in the high grass and slash.

I reloaded my gun and watched to see if he was getting up.  I radioed my hunting partner Rick Todd and he came over from his watch to help me field dress the buck and bring him out.

I have been successful hunting with the rifle and shotgun, but this was my first deer with the black powder.

It was a hunting moment I will never forget.”

    1. Hey Chokerhater…nice to hear from you!

You know, over here Buckstopper goes by the more stripped down version: Rick P

And yes, Barry’s buck would be a good candidate for scoring after the drying period is up..

Hope you stop-by more often, CH!

    1. I figured you like that one Rick…any ballpark score estimate, based on what you see there…course, I know you hate to do that without seeing it first hand.

  1. Very nice deer. The late muzzle loader season seems to help when your looking for some really big boys. The past 2 seasons i got a nice 8pt and 10pt. I am kind of sorry i tagged out early this year and did not get to enjoy it because you almost have the whole bush to yourself and usually they have settled down again.

  2. I have seen this deer, the day it was shot to present. This man deserves recognition, and congratulations for this awesome buck , which he well deserves, after weeks, and many days of hunting, without firing a shot.

  3. Barry just dropped off his buck for mounting. I will post a score after I get it caped out, with his permission of course!

  4. I have not spoken to Barry yet but my guess of the score on his buck was over 10″ shy of the green net score.

    1. Sorry Rick, you’ll need to dumb it down a bit for me..

You’re saying Barry’s buck is 10″ shy of which score now?

  5. In a previous post I made an estimate of the score based on the pictures. I thought the rack would go mid 150s based on the pictures. It green scores more than 10″ bigger than my guess.

    1. Ok, I got it now..so potentially after the drying period and shrinkage etc…..it would Net in the mid-150’s?

Pretty darn nice…as I told Barry, I would like to have seen one that big this year!

    1. Holy crap Rick..as you can tell, I’m slow these days….it would be one of the highest scoring local bucks this year I would think.

At that rate then, the BTR score (In typical) Id imagine, would be very nice as well..maybe close to 160 BTR.

  7. Congrats Barry, well deserved after a slow start to the season
As one of our old hunting buddies would call it ” A talking deer “

    1. Thats great, I just looked at it again and realized it is a clean 5X5..I thought it had a couple of stickers, but I guess not.

Wonder what the ON BTR Muzzleloader record is for the Perfect category….if I wasnt so out of touch with Mike Handley over at Buckmasters, Id drop him a line…
