Wayward moose in Montreal captured and relocated!

(Photo NOT of the Montreal moose)

This morning in the St Michel district of Montreal east, officials’ recieved a call regarding a wayward moose seen on Jarry Street around 8:30 AM. They believe the animal swam across the open water to reach the island of Montreal, which brought it into the heart of Canada’s second largest city.

Police worked quickly and managed to corner the animal where a wildlife officer administered the tranquilizer. Officers were standing by with long guns but fortunately did not have to use them.

The moose was a female believed to be two or three years of age and weighing at least 500 pounds.

The cow moose was safely removed by 9 a.m. and transported to a rural area in the Laurentians, where it will be released back into the wild.

Ahh, they make it sound so easy..

  1. MMMMMM if this is the picture of the animal. i think the animal and wildlife officer need to go back to school, for some sex education . I see a velvet antlers in the picture . and in most cases it is a bull Jeff can you check to see if it was a cow with antlers .

    1. Sorry Chess, I should have indicated that this is NOT the Montreal moose..rather, it is one from Calgary a few days ago..I was unable to find a picture of the Montreal one..

Probably because they tranq’d and relocated it so quickly there was no chance for a photo!

  2. One thing you can say about Montreal Police, they’re known for acting quickly!

Remember the shooting at Dawson College in Sep, 2006? Police were on the scene in a flash and shot the gunman Gimveer Gill in the arm…forcing him to turn the gun on himself.

Miraculously only person was killed in the event, which is hard to believe considering Gill entered the school in a blaze of gunfire shooting at everyone in sight and then holding an entire classroom hostage..

    But I digress….

  3. Another moose was shot and killed in Rockland this morning – 50 feet from my back door. Got to see the animal twitching after being shot, sad way to start my morning 🙁

  4. David, I just contacted my guy at the SUN..would you mind if a reporter got in touch with you about this story?

I think it would be important for mainstream media to pick this up…given everything that’s happened of late.

  5. Jeff – I’m not going to publish any of my contact info on your blog. If you can provide an email where we can communicate in a more private manner, I’d rather go this way.

  6. geez a moose and a chicken in Rockland LOL
    Just kidding David
    don’t blame ya
three moose down, I wonder how many more

  7. Iggy, until the City comes up with that plan they promised…who knows how many more times this will happen!

And next time it could be a big old male black bear!!

  8. I’m happy they had good aim. Like I said, it was shot 50 feet from my back door, glad they didn’t miss!!

  9. David, if they missed, the moose would have probably just run back to where it came from….the bush. Roickland isn’t that big, and no matter which way you run, you end up in forrest….it’s home
Man they just keep killing these animals just for the fun of it. Well someone should tell them something is wrong with them if they get a kick out of killing animals just because they are lost and scared

  10. HAHA You guys have it all wrong … The MNR dressed the bears up in moose outfits so they cant be blamed for any more bear problems ..

  11. The police are only to use deadly force if there is some human danger due to the area the animals have happened upon. If they are shooting moose in your area, they may just be hungry police officers???? No other real reason to kill the animal that I can think of.

  12. Iggy, sure Rockland isn’t big but the forests you talk about are becoming pretty scarce. Which is the reason why were seeing moose now….and there will be more of this. OPP/OPS needs a plan for this – I think that’s very clear now.

  13. It will sure be interesting to see what the City of Ottawa comes up with as a solution..and I predict they will come up with something..

What will be done for those outlining areas like Rockland, is another matter..dealing with urban wildlife issues will not change there, and apparently great change is required on both sides of the City limits!

Sure, many of use here at the Outdoors Guy are active hunters..and have ‘harvested’ moose in the past. What we’re speaking of here is something totally different..these wayward moose are by no means being ‘harvested’, they are simply being wasted!

  14. Bravo!!!

They should come to Ottawa and teach how to handle wildlife.

So proud!!!! Coudo!!!!! You just made me happy again after reading the other story of the calf being shot in Ottawa.

    I love you!!!

  15. I wonder what the OPP will do with the venison ( rockland moose)? This one was not tranqulized ( like the one in Orleans)? the meat should be still good for consumption…right?

The presure will now be with gov’t official to discuss the issue, …Urgently….

never quite seen this much action with moose in spring….I wonder why it’s now happening?

  16. Jeff,

How can I contact you by email? I find your articles very interesting, I have questions in regards of hunting and was wondering if you could help me with some questions about hunting.

Do you have a dedicated website?

    Thank You

  18. Now it’s coming from both sides of the river

    Gatineau police shoot, wound bear
OTTAWA — Gatineau police are searching for a wounded bear after it was shot and escaped into the woods west of the downtown area.

The bear was sighted near Saint Raymond and des Grives boulevards Wednesday morning and police were called to the scene around 10 a.m., said spokeswoman Isabelle Poirier.

After encountering the bear, police called the Quebec Ministry of Natural Resources and Wildlife, which was unavailable and authorized police to shoot the bear, Poirier said.

Police fired two or three shots before the bear disappeared into the surrounding woods, Poirier said.

A search for the animal, which police believe is injured, was still underway at 12:30 p.m.

Poirier said police have received as many as 10 calls about bear sightings in backyards, on roads, and rifling through garbage.

    More to come …

  19. Alain, I just PM’s Concerned Citizen to see what its all about…I suppose we may be a bit intimidating to some…

  20. Jeff,

I received your email. Thank you for your time.

As a suggestion for guys like us that walks the outdoors often, you should have a gallery for people like us to submit pics of encounters in the wild. Could be interesting.

    Cheers

  21. man oh man! ANOTHER MOOSE WASTED!

this is ridiculous. a seriously poor example of red tape BS on why they haven’t met yet. it doesn’t take much
police to wildlife guy who tried to tranq the 1st moose: what size of tranq did you use?
    wildlife guy: not enough.
police: consult your books and/or other zoos or even the montreal police and find out what dosage they used
wildlife guy: sure. just called them. i have the info. not too hard to figure out. got the dosage ready.
police: very good. can we borrow a few tranq guns?
wildlife guy: sure…no problem at all.

police to MNR: are you ok with us having some tranq weapons while we wait for our higher ups and your higher ups to wade through the red tape BS to figure this simple matter out regarding jurisdiction and what to do with wayward animals because it’s obviously too difficult a task to figure out?

THIS IS EMBARRASSING OUR CITY AND WASTING ANIMALS!!!!!!

    1. Don’t worry Keebler..an answer is close at hand they say..and the end of the week is getting closer all the time!

      Outdoorsguy

  22. ya so the City of Ottawa will have a plan in place so that the cops can’t slaughter moose, but what about Rockland?
    Carleton Place?
    Kemptville?
    Finch
    Russell
    Embrun?
    Perth
    Westport?
    Brockville……………………………………………

In other words, it’s a provincial matter and the MNR should be handling this problem

    HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    anyone home at the MNR????

    1. Those areas outside the City of Ottawa will certainly still fall under the MNR, and need to work
      things out I guess…

      Outdoorsguy

    1. Hey Trapper…you trying to scare away my readers…hehe

Seriously though…both sites are great and the perfect place to post images and ask questions..I’m not sure how I could set that up here, but will certainly look into it.

Concerned Citizen, feel free to mention your muskrat problem here at the Outdoors Guy, if
you like..I could even start another Trapping post to facilitate that.

  23. It appears that the recurring issue with all these unecessary wildlife shootings is that no one can get a hold of anyone at MNR by phone or any other private company by phone. I would have thought that both of these types of organizations would have a after-hours or 24 hours phone number that should have been made available to the City of Ottawa, police, and other townships…….maybe this could be something that could at least be put in place first and then work on the contracts and policies later.

I don’t think anyone is home, if you go to Kemptville MNR they don’t even seem to have a public office anymore. Used to be a great way to ask questions, get answers, solve the worlds hunting and fishing dilemmas.
    Gone
    NO ONE IS HOME

Sevice Ontario now, great if you want an OHIP card or a license plate sticker

  25. yea no one home but hunting and fishing licences going up 8% whith new hst. that and gas , fuel oil, gasoline, campsites, internet access ect.. more money for a lot less service. i think we should all stop bying hunting and fishing licence and tags for a couple years ;still go to hunt camp and take pictures from tree stand. when things get worse send them off to local reps to show them were still out there enjoying our nature and they can go to hell. AN OUTDOORS PERSON STRIKE i say.

Sounds like something an outdoors sportsman’s organization should organize
Too bad we don’t have one
Don’t even mention the OFAH, they are “owned” by the Ontario government

  27. iggy i kinda wrote that tongue in cheek but you know what the more i think about it the more i believe thats the only way where going to get anywhere at this point. maybe a hunters and fisherman’s union.
