Petrie Island Ice Fisherman's Association

If you get a chance, check out the great website put together for the benefit of all east-end ice fishermen:

http://www.petrieisland.byethost32.com/

Thanks to my old pal Bob Presland for the heads-up! Bob is one damn fine winter angler and one of the nicest retired postie’s I know. A few years back, he pulled a walleye through the ice that would make most folks drool!

I am told the website was created by Al McIntyre, another avid ice-angler from the Orleans-area. His very comprehensive site features everything you’d ever want to know about winter angling around Petrie, and includes updates on the latest ice conditions and even a link to the Petrie Island webcam.

Times have sure changed, haven’t they? Who can remember the days when Petrie was just another Island, with no marina, no bait shop, no ecological area or boasted the city’s largest beach?

  1. Petrie island is great for taking your kids fishing. Everything is close by and lots of panfish to catch. The website is fantastic. Ice conditions and comments on the fishing is posted.

  2. I have been fishing at Petri Island for over ten years and I can tell you there is lot of fish cought there. Just in January of last year I cought 19 Northern pike from 3 to 7-1/2 Lbs, you can see some of them on the Petri Island web site. The huts people construct are well made and there are huts that people where spend the weekend. Just come down for yourself and visit everybody are pleasent and love to talk especially Big Al.

    See you there.

  4. Hi Jeff, glad to see you back in action. Another great day at Petrie today! What a way to spend family day! Fishing was great, even had improvised curlers on the ice with brooms and plastic jugs with frozen ice water for rocks! Weather was ideal! Walleye bay has been active, with 3-4 pounders and pike being caught in both the baitshop and walleye bay. Most recent suggestion is to pound the bottom to raise a cloud, it attracts larger fish as they think the perch are laying eggs in the sand….

  5. Hey Yves..thanks for dropping in..it has been awhile..thanks for the update, I will make a point of checking in with you on Petrie updates.

I’m glad to hear that things are going well!

The annual derby will take place on Saturday, February 15th (Free Family fishing weekend) Oziles Marina and Bait Shop will be running the derby this year and we expect a great turnout. Hope we see you there if you’re in the area.

    Best regards,
