Pickle Jar Bear may have broken free

Reports from North-western Ontario seem to indicate the black bear who has spent more than 2-weeks with a plastic pickle jar stuck on his head, has managed to free itself.

The MNR office in Thunder Bay received a call from a resident who claims to have found a broken plastic container matching the description of the one first seen lodged on a bear’s head more than 2-weeks ago!

Hair analysis will be performed on the plastic jar for the presence of bear hair.

Another witness who saw the bear just two days ago and snapped a photo of it, claims it was in an entirely different area at the time and is sceptical of the jar found.

So there you go, the bear may or may not be free.  I will keep you posted!

  1. The latest news from Thunder Bay on the Pickle Jar Bear is not good.

“The Province” has reported that Ministry of Natural Resources officers found the jar that covered the head of an adolescent bear. But now they fear the bear, which garnered international attention because of its plight, has drowned.

The pickle jar that made it impossible for the bear to eat or drink was discovered Thursday, said conservation officer Ross Johnston.

“It’s got a clump of bear fur in it,” said Johnston. “I’m confident it’s the jar, 100 per cent.”

Johnston said he won’t know the bear’s fate for sure “unless it washes up on shore.”

But for now, there is no sign the bear had drowned, he said.

  2. if the bear lost as much weight as some have claimed, it probably just fell off. A bear’s head is scull, but there is a lot of fat too and it would loose some size. That’s what I’m hoping for anyway.
