Thanks to Edward for sending-in this report of a moose spotted this weekend running across the Rideauview Golf Course in Manotick:

“I wasn’t aware there was an “Outdoors Guy” out there, but thought you would be interested in knowing we spotted a MOOSE just South of Manotick at the RideauView Golf Course, on Sunday, June 28th .  We were putting out on the 16th hole and this “MOOSE” came running past the three of us, galloped across the 12th and 18th fairway, and jumped to the nearby woods.   (honest.. I’m a Newfoundlander.. It was about 800 pound moose.. and I was no where near the 19th hole ;-)) Before this, I had no idea where or how a moose could have gotten to the course.. ( Hwy ? Across the river ? ) .. Shocking in any case..  In the pic included, you will see a last shot of the moose before he jumped into the woods. “

If you’re in the area please keep an eye out for Bullwinkle! Thanks to Edward for sending in this report.

  1. LOL. Now thats a hard one to believe.

A Newfoundlander far from the 19th hole.

  2. Newfoundlanders carry the 19th hole in their golf bags. But serously there are moose in the east end just outside Ottawa so it wouldn’t have to travel more than 15 to 20km to get to the Manotick area

    1. Oh man we’ve open the floodgates now!

Anyway, I don’t know which way he was heading but he sure seemed teed-off!

  3. I don’t know his handicap but he sure wasn’t putting around, he drove straight for the woods…looks like he took an 86 and called it a day

    1. An 86 would be a pretty poor score for a scratch golfer moose!

  4. Back in May my wife and I spotted a moose crossing Prince of Wales Drive in North Gower.

  5. jeff have not seen any moose but on the way to work into ottawa from almonte, i slowed down for a small doe crossing the road on march road actually just outside of almonte.I opened my drivers window as i stopped to make sure it got accross the road and the crazy little doe came up to my window and was tilting her head while i told her to cross, it was weird yet funny how this little doe just starred at me then slowly walked over to the other side. the deer numbers are up where i live and have observed deer also chasing the turkeys in a field as well isn’t nature awesome have a great day .

    1. Nature is awesome…nice to hear that deer numbers seem to be up.

Thanks for stopping by Mike, now go catch some of those big Big Rideau lake trout!!.

  6. Getting all packed up for my Dumoine trip. Got my jigs ready. The outboard motor is running great, need to go over to Hull to pick up two and a half pounds of leaches and then just sit and wait for the day of departure.

    1. Mmmm….leaches…yummy!

Have to admit Iggs, I’ve never used leaches as bait ever in life.

Have a great time and hope you catch a pile of those famous Dumoine Blue Walleye!

Send me some pics when you get back.

  7. When I first started going up there about 25 years ago all we used was white lead jigs with black plastic worms with a chartreuse tail. They worked very well but then we got a tip that leaches worked better and they do. They are also much more durable than worms. These aren’t blood suckers, they try to cling to you but I’ve never had one actually attach itself to me. I do have a phobia about boodsuckers though

  8. Leeches are great!
If you’re on the St. Lawrence and try to sweeten a jig or a harness with a worm all you usually get is gobies. The gobies don’t seem to hit the leeches at all.
Problem is getting them – although I have to admit I haven’t put much effort into searching for them yet this year… Where are they in Hull?
Some of the places I’ve been to in the past sure don’t keep them as fresh as they could.

  9. Banana sinker on the mainline, bb snap swivel then a 30 inch fluorocarbon lead with a floating jighead, is the perfect medicine for large wallies and pretty much all I use in late July and August. Big wallies like leeches and numerous over 9 have fallen to that one. This rig is also deadly for smallies who are normally on the same shoals. Norris live bait usually has a good supply of leeches and the darn things last forever if you keep them in the fridge and change the water. I have tried to trap them myself but haven’t found a place that had anything but blood suckers.
